|Happy Birthday, America
Happy birthday to this land
From mountain peaks to coastal sand,
From pilgrims brave to astronauts
The joy of freedom fills our thoughts.
With pride we claim this land of ours.
But then our eyes turn to the stars.
The hand of God has brought us here
And from His praise we must not veer .
“In God we trust,” our motto reads,
Across the years He filled our needs.
It was not man who made us great.
It was the Lord. There’s no debate!
So Happy Birthday to this great land.
For God still holds us in His hand!
Psalms 33:12-15 (NIV)
Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people he chose for his inheritance.
13 From heaven the Lord looks down
and sees all mankind;
14 from his dwelling place he watches
all who live on earth-
15 he who forms the hearts of all,
who considers everything they do.
In the opening verse, the Psalmist alludes to the unique favor placed upon Israel, “the people he chose for his inheritance.” However, the context immediately following also associates God’s blessing to “all mankind.”
Undoubtedly, the writer was specifically thinking of Israel when writing these words, but, given the complete context, I think it is also fair to say that the words, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” can be applied by all nations who honor God.
Our nation certainly has reaped that blessing. Happy birthday, America!
