America the Beautiful

I became emotional today when we sang America the Beautiful in our church service. I was fine in the first verse but during the second verse I was overcome in the spirit and just started weeping. I was weeping for the faith that was lost. I was weeping for the beautiful light that has been dimmed.

Mostly, I was weeping over the heavy blanket of dark deception that has enveloped this nation. As a whole, the church has taken her eyes off Jesus and became enchanted by the sparkly trinkets of the enemy. We can blame the other party; we can blame the media; we can blame Hollywood; we can blame anyone we wish-but the blame lies at the feet of the Church. It is the church who fell asleep. It is the church who became complacent. It is the church who looked the other way as the enemy infiltrated our homes, our society, and even our churches.

But there remains a remnant! There remains a people who have sharpened their focus on Jesus, who are seeking His face and His will. There remains a people who says we will not relinquish the Light; we will not give up. God remains on His throne and we will speak Truth and Life and Light into this dark world while we still have opportunity! We will not give up the fight, for the fight is the ultimate spiritual battle. We are indeed battling for the soul of this nation and, by default, the soul of the globe. The enemy will have his day, but not so long as the remnant remains. The glory of the Lord is empowering and equipping His people and we will bless his name forever more!

Below is a rendition of our National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner. This version includes a verse which was later added by Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. While he wrote it at the onset of the civil war, I believe the lyrics are very appropriate for today. (Added lyrics begin at 2:40)

When our land is illumined with Liberty’s smile,

If a foe from within strike a blow at her glory,

Down, down with the traitor that dares to defile

The flag of her stars and the page of her story!

By the millions unchained who our birthright have gained,

We will keep her bright blazon forever unstained!

And the Star-Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave

While the land of the free is the home of the brave.

And it is only appropriate to conclude it with Francis Scott Key’s final verse:

O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation.
Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the Heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: ‘In God is our trust.’
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And finally, we have the inspiring Battle Hymn of the Republic. While the entire song is beautiful, I find the third verse particularly notable:

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;

He is sifting out the hearts of all before His judgment seat.

O be swift, my soul, to answer Him; be jubilant, my feet!

Our God is marching on.

if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
II Chronicles 7:14
